At Applied, we have a strong ethos of hacking and building cool things that can just start as Friday afternoon chat ideas that then lead into all night codathons. We have built various cool apps doing such fun hackathons and some of these hacks have been expanded to become winners of national software challenges ( these have gone on to win national software challenges (Ask Dory, Call-e, CCDA parsers, Health Vocab API etc).
